چکیده

A much clearer picture of the progress towards an integrated high speed multi-service network is now emerging. Such networks were anticipated over twenty years ago, at a time when packet switching was just another way to transmit data. Now the technology is so mature that media barons are organising their investments in order to take advantage of the proot. Many of the technical problems are now solved and the fundamental protocols required for these networks are suuciently well-deened to support a rapidly expanding industry. However, consensus on how to talk about the statistics of the data which is transmitted around these networks has not been readily forthcoming. Nevertheless, there now exists a family of models with suucient richness to describe real traac fairly well, which can be parametrised conveniently, and which degenerates to a readily analysable Gaussian model in the situation of very large networks. This analysis leads to important architectural conclusions which accord with common sense, in particular the conclusion that integrated networks of the future should be able to provide better and better service with eeciency tending toward perfect. This is a rather happy conclusion which thoroughly connrms the current rapid drive towards an all-encompassing integrated multiservice network. Rather than the increase in traac and the diversity of service types leading to greater and greater complexity, it seems that the ow of traac in our networks may become steadily more manageable.

Measurement-based Traac Modeling: Capturing Important Statistics

Measurement-based traac characterization has come to acquire a great deal of importance in high-speed networks. In this paper, we segregate the traac behaviour into the macrody-namics and microdynamics depending on the time scales at which the process is observed. We examine the validity of the Markovian assumption which is commonly made for modeling the macrodynamics of correlated traac in net...

Point Process Approaches for Modeling and Analysis of Self-similar Traac: Part Ii { Applications

In previous work 24], Fractal Point Processes (FPPs) have been proposed as novel tools for understanding, modeling and analyzing diverse types of self-similar traac behavior. We apply the FPP models in the context of network traac modeling and performance analysis. Two qualitatively diierent fractal data sets (Bellcore Ethernet traces) are characterized by FPP models. Comparison of model-driven...

Implications of Self-Similarity for Providing End-to-End QoS Guarantees in High-Speed Networks: A Framework of Application Level Traffic Modeling

This paper is based on two novel research movements in the context of modeling, design, control, and management of future high-speed networks: (i) end-to-end QOS guarantees and (ii) the self-similar (fractal) nature of real-world traac. The former pertains to building an integrated framework within which end-to-end QOS guarantees are fully supported in an eecient way while taking advantage of t...

Characterization and Modeling of Mpeg Video Traac on Multiple Timescales

We analyze the statistical properties of MPEG video traac based on a collection of data from real video applications. Based on that analysis, we develop a model whose accuracy and relatively low computational complexity make it well suited for real-time traac generation experiments on broadband testbed networks. The major feature of our approach is the decomposition of the frame size sequence i...
